Just think of the movie Flicka: she protects Katie from a mountain lion! Mustangs and mules are very similar in that way. They bond very well with their riders, and are willing to do anything for them. They have great hooves, they love to run and they have strong instincts. They are nomads: for centuries they have been roaming around North America, so they have outstanding endurance.
They aren’t incredibly common, but if you think about it, they’re a great choice for the sport.

They are my favorite breed of horse overall, and I dream of gentling and training them one day, so when I heard that they can be excellent choices for Endurance I was ecstatic. They are extremely surefooted, which is extremely essential when riding Endurance: horses go through all sorts of conditions! They are generally very friendly and easy to get along with, as well but they must be the “original” version of the breed and not the new show-type because they don’t have the body structure and endurance to compete well. They are still fully capable of doing well in Endurance, but they must be in extremely good shape.Ī breed commonly seen in Endurance riding is the Appaloosa. Quarter horses, on the other hand, are stockier than some other breeds. Most other breeds used in Endurance, like Arabians, have very light bone structure and are generally smaller/lighter. They have limited endurance – they are the fastest horses for a quarter of a mile for a reason – and they don’t have the bone structure for Endurance. They are fast! However, Quarter Horses are best suited for Limited Distance rides for several reasons. We would regularly go for gallops along the roadside and my father once clocked us at 32 mph. I once leased a beautiful bay mare named Lady who was a Quarter Horse. Less commonly known is the reason for their name: they can run faster than any other breed on the planet for a quarter of a mile. Throughout the years they’ve entertained jobs as “husband horses,” lesson ponies and wonderful show horses. Most horse people know a few Quarter Horses and know how calm they generally are.
Quarter horses are generally laid back enough to safely compete in Endurance.
